A possessed PC?

For about a week, my PC has failed to go into standby mode. It spins down the drives and then wakes up again. Any ideas as to where to look first (software/hardware) for figuring out the cause?

I guess the first thing to ask is, have you changed anything about the system in the last week? Installed any new hardware or software?

You can check in the Control Panel under Power Options. (Assuming a Windows PC.)

Also you might consider your video driver, of all things. That has to work with the power control system in order to handle screen blanking and orderly hibernation/sleep.

Power supply could also be a culprit. Not terribly expensive and reasonably easy to swap out.

Ah! The video card software pops up a message that it couldn't run properly...

If you cure that problem and it still doesn't sleep properly, the next thing to look at is anything configured to talk to the outside world. Software that looks for an internet connection, or particularly anything related to external devices such as camera card readers.

I actually have problems with my wireless optical mouse not allowing my screensaver to come on - if I flip it on its back so the sensor isn't scanning anything my screensaver will come up and my system will sleep just fine.

I myself have had issues with optical mice (more frequently, optical track balls) occasionally, when sitting still, causing the cursor to move on its own. It stops when I move it just a bit. I've assumed it's just a little glitch in the optical sensor.

Hmmm; I have noticed my computer not sleeping sometimes lately. I haven't figured out why yet. And it has a wireless optical mouse on it. I will have to try turtling the mouse now and then and see if it ever happens then.

Perhaps a brisk surf before you put it to bed.

What I want to know is how to make the pc not act like I clicked on a link if the cursor stays on it for a tenth of a second.

If it's a desktop, check your mouse settings. If it's a laptop, trying using an external USB mouse.

Check for scheduled tasks/ system maintenance runs that can interfere. As far as the video card goes, go to the makers website & ensure you have downloaded / installed the latest drivers. Even if it is the same drivers, reinstall them as your version may have a bug. Power supply issues normally cause intermittant hardware issues. This is most likely a software, not hardware issue.
