Gremlin update: the cat is well
The problem was, in fact, a hair mat. My friends Shawn and Becky managed to remove it and the beast is as happy as ever.

I figured as much. I have a cat who looks almost exactly like Gremlin, but he's quite a bit pudgier. In my experience, cats like him tend to gain weight. That + the long hair leads to grooming difficulties. You'll probably need to brush him regularly or have a groomer shave him once in a while.

The hard part is not laughing at him. They shave down everything except the head, the paws and most of the tail. He sits there with this injured look.

"...the beast is as happy as ever."

Yes, he looks completely thrilled in that picture:-)

This is sort of off-topic, but does he get a lot of hairballs? I had a longhair a few years ago, and started feeding him Iams Hairball Control, and it worked wonders (not to mention that my cat just generally looked healthier.) It's a bit more expensive, but it's got real meat as the first ingredient, and it really does work...so much so that I've never fed my cats anything else, and they only yack up a hairball maybe twice a year (even the ferret I used to have loved it, and kept him from barfing all the time too, since ferrets can get hairballs as well.)
