	I know no more than you do about this, I read about it in the paper or online a month or so ago... I'm not a fan of the idea, Especially this part, "GPS able computer chip technology" Can anyone say big brother? (Reply to this)

I know my state opposed it, but is apparently grudgingly complying to protect its Federal funding.

One of my favorite ideas is to pass an ordnance requiring businesses to submit their employees' Federal tax withholding to a local accounting office. Taxpayers could then file their Federal taxes at the city office, indicating what percentage of the Federal government they wish to support. The remainder would directly fund local government. Then we could simply ignore overreaching, unconstitutional laws like the REAL ID Act, the Federal Controlled Substances Act, and the No Child Left Behind Act.

	I heard on the Northern News Network this morning (eastern Montana radio) that DHS was offering a 10 year phase in program to try to get Montana and other holdouts to buy into the program. (Reply to this)(Parent)

NH passed a law last year, prohibiting the state government from complying with the RealID provisions.

The program isn't even in effect, and there's already "mission creep" in the works. The supposed "purpose" of RealID was to "stop terrorism and illegal immigration," but now the Feds plan to require that you show a RealID-compliant ID if you want to purchase certain medicine, like Sudafed.

Basically, it says this:

If you want your state driver's licenses to be acceptable as proof of identity and/or citizenship for Federal purposes, they have to meet a list of standards designed to make them harder to forge. Otherwise, you'll have to have some other form of ID for any Federal purpose.

Plus the usual bunch of crap various people hang onto any legislation. The latter stuff is the sticky bit for some; others just object to the very concept of ID.

The states refusing to meet it are going to be in a bit of pickle; their citizens won't be able to get on an airplane anymore without a passport or some other Federal ID.
