Camcorder recommendation needed
I'd like to get a camcorder with the following features:

- records to a hard drive
- has ring-controlled manual focus
- has manual exposure
- can accept external microphones, preferably wireless

Where do I start looking?

Canon XL2 perhaps? Not sure off the top of my head if it records to a hard drive, but if anything can, it could.

Also, what is the price range? There's some nice ones in the $1,500 to $5,000 range, but the really good ones tend to start at $30,000 or so.

It's been a long time since I've shopped for a camcorder. Amazing what you can get for $1,000. I went to Amazon and looked around. Check this out:

JVC 3CCD with 60GB hard drive
It has a Fujinon lens

We bought the Sony HDR-SR1 and have been very happy with it for a home video camera. It's HDx2 (High Def and Hard Drive). It has the ring focus (technically, you can program the ring to do whatever you want) and takes external mikes.

I've used the HDR-HC1 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/mapper-montag/2269945093/) which looks to be the same camera one generation removed or so, and it does indeed work well. And flawlessly with an external mic, I might add.

B & H are great, their prices usually beat Amazon, and their web site is laid out so that you can easily compare the features of the various cameras.
