*blink*

Wow. That actually got me choked up.

I don't think I could be a 911 dispatcher. Can you imagine being on the dispatch end of that call, and hearing someone die - knowing you couldn't do anything more to stop it?

Thank John Moses Browning this one didn't end that way.

got me too. No way could I do 911 dispatch, one or two calls like that and I'd be a wreck (and that doesn't count the calls where the intruder had the gun and the victim didn't, no way.) And listening to something like that just makes me swear harder at my state's gun laws (I live in NY.)

Oh, no kidding - I actually kinda meant that in my first post, that the calls where the victim dies are the ones that would destroy me.

I can imagine any call like that is hard for the dispatcher - but at least she got to go home that night knowing an innocent person lived!

I kinda figured that was what you ment, but I felt the need to clarify, mostly my own reaction to that recording.

You girls definitely have the right idea. Listening to that would fill me with a real rage to go "kill the bastard" if the bad guy had won and escaped! And thanks for posting the YouTube link, Oleg. One of the best RKBA arguements I've ever heard. Especially since it is REAL!! --Rocky

"A gun in the home is more likely to kill somebody known to you."

This is what the gun grabbers say to make you think you'll shoot your family members.

What it REALLY means is gang bangers know who they're assassinating, and that this woman correctly identified Ryan Lee Bergner correctly that evening even before she had actully seen him.

I'm glad she survived, and that sick bastard was taken off of our hands.

To be precise, they say that the ratio of killing "someone you know, like a family members or loved one" against intruders is 43 to 1. This biased statement comes from Arthur L. Kellerman, Protection or Peril?: An Analysis of Firearm-Related Deaths in the Home, 314 New Eng. J. Med. 1557-60 1986.

This is what they didn't tell you:

-37 of those claimed "loved ones" committed suicide, rather than got shot by error. Not really something a "normal" person would need to take into account when buying a gun, unless you actually think that having a gun in the house makes you suicidial.
-The majority of shootings involved criminal activity between the family members. Hardly something that a normal law-abiding citizen would do.
-They included aquaintainces, which means that even this case would be recorded as "shooting someone you knew".

The real kicker is this:

-The assailant is shot dead in less than 0.1% of successful armed self-defence cases. This means that the people who support this "43 bad outcomes vs. 1 legitimate one"-argument ignore 99.9% of the cases, where armed self-defence provided a positive outcome: Innocent life was protected, and even the criminal survived to see a fair trial.

Which one of them? There's tons of information on these subjects at www.keepandbeararms.com/downloads/GunFacts_v3.2.pdf

I sent this out to various people including the nrainstructors yahoo group. This could be useful for the self defense classes.

I regularly teach NRA Personal Protection in the Home classes. Schedule at:
http://wilsonhillpistol.org/events.php

This is THE classic scenario for a home self defense shooting.

If the text at the beginning is correct it appears that her only mistake was to let the perp get close enough to start strangling her before she started shooting. Also, she should have gotten into a locked room before the 911 operator told her to.

The 911 operator handled this very well. Her advice was good. She checked that the woman had her firearm in her hand and not locked up. Under extreem stress people can neglect to think about the most obvious things.

She recommended that she get into a room with a lock on the door. She did say something about not doing anything rash but I interpreted that as advice to not start shooting before the perp came through the door.

And yes, listening to this was an emotional experience.

"What are you trying to do, kill me?" the mortally wounded Bergner asked.

"Are you trying to kill me?"

No, just trying to make sure you don't kill me, you piece of filth.
