It's even worse than that. Drug prohibition directly threatens our national security, because it is destablizing and alienating one of our two physically-closest allies, Mexico, through funding the drug cartels. Mexico was on an upward trajectory for decades, until the cartels got so powerful as to become essentially rebel factions claiming territory. And because this territory is (of course!) in Northern Mexico, this violence is spilling over our borders. As an added bad bonus, it also makes illegal immigration a more intractable problem, since honest Mexicans are fleeing the violence, and the obvious place to flee is America.

Also, all the issues it causes us in Afghanistan, burning their most valuable crop. It's not exact a "winning hearts and minds" strategy.
